What is DDR RAM and DDR2 RAM?

Types of RAM

Just like anything else, memory technology has come a long way over the past several years. Double-Data-Rate Synchronous Dynamic RAM (DDR SDRAM or DDR RAM for short) is similar to its predecessor but incorporates one significant difference. This type of memory transfers data twice as fast by using the clock signal differently.

Think of the clock signal like a yo-yo. In previous types of memory, data was transferred on the rising edge of the signal. DDR RAM uses the same speed for clock signal, but transfers data on the rising and falling edges, literally doubling the rate of transfer in the same amount of time. Progress does not stop there, however.

Now we come to DDR2 RAM. Like DDR RAM, this type of computer memory can transfer data on both the rising and falling edges of the clock signal. Unlike its predecessor, DDR2 RAM uses a different architecture. This design makes it run faster and increases bandwidth, allowing it to transfer more data through one chip faster. DDR2 RAM, while running more data at a faster rate, is actually using less power, thus is also more efficient.
