Know What You Want, Go Home with What You Want

If you are buying a preconfigured laptop, you should apply principles similar to if you were building your own computer. In both cases, you have to start out by knowing what you want to use the computer for. What does this computer need to be able to do for you? If lightweight and portability are your primary concerns because you travel with your computer often, that will lead you in one direction. If processing power and RAM is paramount and screen size is not important, this leads you in another direction.

People who buy preconfigured laptops tend to buy based on style, looks and price. These can be factors you consider, but should not be the first ones considered. Decide before you start looking at computers what you want it for. Video games? Travel? Video editing?

Once you figure that out you can look at the models that fit your criteria. From there the style and other considerations come into play. Preconfigured machines are usually limited in the upgrades that can be made, so once you buy the notebook you are locked in. Make sure you know what you want before you buy something. If you know what you want you should be going home with what you want.
